The management is responsible for the performance of all the members in the various functional units, for providing vision, leadership and guidance, for providing reports, for allocating resources, and for attracting, motivating and retaining the best possible staff.
Responsibilities
Serving as the organization’s primary internal leader, the Managing Director will partner with the Vice President to develop and implement the strategic priorities of Gazettes. He/she will report to the President and hold individuals and teams accountable and guide the organization's evolution and growth. According to Gazettes Policy, however, the Managing Director will not interfere in the assessment, selection, or editing of Journal articles.

The Managing Director is responsible for:

Attending board meetings and contributing to the development of business plan, objectives and the future plans and ambitions of the organization, which are shaped by the commitment to support Gazettes' mission and vision;
Establishing and executing the publishing strategy for the sixteen Journals, including optimizing revenue growth, editorial quality, cost control and scalable efficiencies;
Working with the Executive Editor and Vice President for developing and monitoring appropriate metrics to track portfolio performance on a regular basis;
Leading the annual budget and forecasting of the journals revenues and costs, and the continued development and optimization of their business models;
Identifying and engaging with external partners to increase submissions and developing business opportunities, while maintaining the integrity of Gazettes' editorial values;
Designing effective marketing and branding campaigns that support organizational objectives, and evaluating and developing opportunities for supporting the Journals through advertising and sponsorship;
Developing strategies for financial sustainability of the sixteen Journals, and for positioning them across global markets and research disciplines;

Representing Gazettes at industry and academic events, and with external stakeholders and policy makers as needed;

Ensuring that all relevant new policies, processes, workflows and systems are maximally efficient, harmonized wherever possible and customer-focused;

Maintaining productive and dynamic relationships with the staff, and collaborating closely with colleagues across Gazettes, ensuring excellent communication so that the teams across functions work towards their core objectives.

Requirements
Candidates must demonstrate their suitability for the position apart from having the following:

A Masters degree in a science subject, MBA or PhD preferred;
Years of experience in managing high-performing teams, preferably scientific or technical;
Years of progressively responsible experience, preferably in editorial or publishing;
Ability to work effectively with a wide variety of people from peer-to-peer to management;

Ability to think strategically and to successfully implement new strategies and business plans;

Written and verbal communication skills and interpersonal skills for operating at all levels with internal and external partners and stakeholders;

Organizational skill to plan and manage resource allocation and budgets to agreed plans, reporting and acting according to changing circumstances;

Interest in science and scientists, and ability to engage in productive relationships with them;

Dedication to open access and to transforming scholarly communication.
